Liberia, Finland Host International Women Colloquium
Liberia will make history by hosting the International Colloquium on Women's Empowerment, Leadership Development, International Peace and Security. The conference is expected to be held in Monrovia from March 7 to 8, with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and President Tarja Halonen of Finland co-hosting and welcoming several high profile women from all around the world.
According to the organizers, the Colloquium is expected to empower women to assume leadership roles and provide leadership in confronting major global issues such as climate change, women's empowerment, and economic development, among others.
The Colloquium seeks to realize the aims of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security to ensure that women are protected from the worst abuses in times of conflict and to empower them to play their rightful and vital role in helping their countries prevent conflict.
The Colloquium will bring together international group of women leaders to identify the successes and failures of measures adopted from SCR 1325 to serve as a resource base and catalyst for activities worldwide. It will further develop and support meaningful strategies and activities for increasing global security.
Sources close to the organizers say an International Center for Women Empowerment, Leadership Development, Peace and Security named in honor of Angie Brooks Randolph, Liberia's former permanent Ambassador to the UN will be set up in Monrovia. The Center will serve as a conduit for program implementation to address issues arising from the Colloquium.
It will also support results-oriented projects around the world including training current and future women leaders, research, analysis and advocacy on women's leadership.
The Center will be established in honor of Angie Brooks Randolph, Liberia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Africa's first female President of the General Assembly of the UN in 1969.
